I was left heartbroken when abandoned by forty to fifty pied oystercatchers, but a short time later I found half a dozen kind enough to stay around and let me observe them feeding, napping, and having an occasional paddle.

This one was interested in something which it tried to winkle out from amongst the rocks.

Winkle. Now there's a word I don't use very often, but interestingly, it derives from periwinkle, a small herbivorous shore-dwelling mollusc with a spiral shell.
